This week we had a handwashing session with our school nurse. We thought about how important it is to wash our hands at the right points of the day. After using the toilet, before we eat, if we have touched animals and when we have been playing outside. We also talked about how important it is to wash them once we have coughed or sneezed on our hands, this is so important at the moment with lots of colds going around.

She reminded us that we begin by squirting soap, then rubbing it into our hands – not forgetting the back of our hands and tops of our fingers. We wash them for two minutes, which is the same time as singing “Happy Birthday” twice! Then we rinse them until all of the bubbles have gone. The next thing to do is to dry them thoroughly.

After she had left, when we all had clean hands, I reminded Nursery of our handwashing song:

Wash, wash, wash your hands
Wash nasty germs away
If you don’t you might get ill
And that will ruin your day!

We later used a bucket of water and soap to check we all remembered the steps needed when washing our hands.

See if you can teach your grown ups our song!
