In our Science lessons this term, we have been learning about classification. Last week were learnt about micro-organisms and how these can be classified into three groups: fungi, prokaryotes and protists.
We knew the most about fungi as we all saw lots of mushrooms growing in the forest in Sayers Croft and we know that yeast is needed in bread to make it rise. But what we don’t know is what are the best conditions for fungi to grow.
We set up an experiment to see what conditions are the best for mould (a type of fungi) to grow on bread. We wanted to test whether it needed heat or the cold, dry or damp, light or dark and air or no air. This meant we’ve had to put 11 pieces of bread around the school to test the different conditions.
This week, we collected up our bread to see where was best for the mould to grow. Before we looked at the bread, we looked at the conditions and made predictions. Most of us thought that bread number 4 would have the most mould as that was kept damp, in a warm, dark place which are the ideal conditions for mould to grow. However it turns out that number nine had the best conditions for mould to grow and we tried to evaluate our experiment to work out why!
