For Art this half term, we made collages of rivers to tie in with our rivers topic. We used the artwork of Fahrelnissa Zeid, a Turkish born artist of the early twentieth century, to inspire us and we analysed several of her abstract works. We discussed the different shapes and colours she combined and the effect we think was intended on the observer.
After looking at examples of collages, we practised different collage techniques including layering with big ripped pieces, small ripped pieces and ripped strips as well as squares, rectangles, circles and triangles cut with scissors. By experimenting with and exploring each technique, we could start thinking about the different techniques we wanted to use for our artworks. We asked ourselves which techniques we preferred and which we found easier or trickier.
Each of us were given a range of different images of rivers which we could use as stimulus for our collage. We didn’t have to replicate the image exactly but it was there to give us a starting point and we were provided with lots of materials we could use. We had to remember one rule: our work could have gaps as long as they were intentional. If the gaps weren’t intentional, they had to be filled.
There were lots of excellent collages of rivers and we are very proud of our end results!
