This year for Science Week our theme was curiosity. Curiosity means wanting to learn more about the world around us by asking questions, exploring new ideas and finding out how things work.

Year 1 are naturally very curious, so we decided to carry out a fun scientific investigation. We love biscuits in Year 1, so we asked an important question: Which biscuit is the strongest when dipped in milk?

To find out, we investigated four different biscuits: a Bourbon, Rich Tea, Ginger Nut and a Chocolate Digestive. Our challenge was to see how many dips into milk it would take before each biscuit broke.

Before we started, we used our scientific thinking to make predictions about which biscuit would be the strongest. We recorded our ideas in a tally chart. The Chocolate Digestive was the most popular choice because we thought the layer of chocolate might make it stronger. Some children predicted that the Bourbon would win because it has several layers, while others thought the Ginger Nut looked very sturdy.

Next, we carried out our investigation. We carefully dipped each biscuit into milk and counted how many dips it took before the biscuit broke. It was very exciting to test our predictions and see what would happen!

And of course, once the investigation was finished, we were able to enjoy the biscuits too!

Year 1 had a fantastic time being scientists – asking questions, making predictions and carrying out an experiment. Our curiosity helped us discover that science can be fun, tasty and full of surprises!
