This week in Reception Literacy, we have been busy developing both our oracy and writing skills through our much loved class text ‘The Shopping Basket’ by John Burningham.

We began by revisiting the story and working together to create a detailed story map, carefully sequencing the events as Steven made his journey home from the shop. The children showed great enthusiasm as they illustrated the different animals he encountered, discussing what each one took from his basket. It was fantastic to see their growing confidence as they used their speaking skills to explain their ideas clearly.

To challenge themselves further, the children labelled the animals and food items, applying their phonics knowledge to sound out and write independently. We were especially impressed with their determination when tackling tricky words like “kangaroo” and “elephant”!

Building on this in our following lesson, the children then used their story maps to support their writing. After doing some shared writing together where we looked at how to construct a sentence using colourful semantics (thinking about ‘who?’, ‘doing?’ and ‘what?’), we worked together to write the first sentence. The children then independently wrote their own sentences to retell each part of the story, showing fantastic focus and confidence.

We are incredibly proud of the effort, enthusiasm, and progress shown by all the children in Literacy this week.

Well done, Reception!
