As part of our Schools to Market project, Year 2 were excited to welcome a special visitor – gardener Will!

We began the session by discussing the importance of growing our own food and how gardening can have a positive impact on our health, our environment, and the wildlife around us. This linked perfectly with our Geography topic on Food and Farming in the UK, which we have been really enjoying in class. The children have been learning about where food comes from, how it is grown, and the journey it takes before reaching our plates, so this was a fantastic opportunity to bring our learning to life.

Will then introduced us to the seeds and plants we would be working with before showing us how to prepare the soil ready for planting. The children loved getting their hands dirty as they filled pots with soil, planted seeds, and learned about what plants need to grow strong and healthy.

Will also shared an interesting fact with us – did you know that touching soil can actually make you feel happier? Scientists have found that a natural bacteria in soil can help boost our mood and help us feel calm and positive. The children were fascinated by this and thoroughly enjoyed spending time on the roof, connecting with nature.

It was a wonderful hands-on learning experience and we are excited to continue caring for our plants over the coming weeks as we watch them begin to grow.

Thank you, Will, for such an inspiring and educational session!
