This week in Nursery the children explored what minibeasts need to survive. We began by discussing the meaning of the word survive and talked about the basic needs of all living things, including food, water and a safe place to live. The children shared some fantastic ideas and thought carefully about how minibeasts find everything they need in their natural habitats.

They discovered that, although minibeasts don’t have taps or water bottles like we do, they can find water in places such as ponds and puddles. Working together, the children used a range of small world resources to create the perfect minibeast habitat, adding trees and logs for shelter, blue paper to represent a pond, and leaves and bushes to provide food and protection. They also discussed how some minibeasts, such as worms and millipedes, like to hide beneath the grass to stay safe.

To finish our learning, we talked about how we can all help to care for our environment and protect the animals and minibeasts that share it with us. The children showed great curiosity and teamwork throughout the activity!
