This week, Reception took part in a brilliant first aid workshop where we learnt some important skills to help others in an emergency.
We began by talking about what first aid is and when we might need it. Then we met Teddy, who had a cut! Martin showed us how to treat a cut carefully using tissue and a plaster, and we had a go at looking after our own teddies who needed some care by applying pressure to stop the bleeding, wiping the cut gently to clean it and putting a plaster on to help it heal.
Teddy then had another accident and bumped his head! We took turns gently
holding an ice pack on his head and practised asking two very important questions: “Are you feeling sick?” and “Are you feeling dizzy?”.
Martin then asked us what number to call in an emergency, and we proudly remembered it from our People Who Help Us topic and were able to answer: 999!
To finish our session, we practised making pretend 999 calls using toy phones and asking for an ambulance. We also put teddy in the recovery position to help him stay safe while we waited for the ambulances. Martin told us that it was very important to also learn the number of our house and the name of our road so that we would be able to tell the operator if we ever needed to ring 999.
The children loved learning how to help others who had been hurt and were very sensible throughout the session.
Thank you to Martin for our very important workshop and to the SVPA for funding such an important visitor!
Well done Reception!
