This term, Year 3’s sport in PE has been athletics. In the build up to sports day, we did a lot of work on the events which would be covered on sports day and since then we have been focusing on events which did not feature. As this week has been a very hot week, it was best to choose an event which didn’t require too much running around and that event was the triple jump.
After a vigorous warm up, we reminded ourselves of the technique behind the standing long jump – using our arms to propel ourselves forwards. We practiced the hop, step and jump and created a set of rules for us to remember. 1) the foot we take off from is the same foot we land on in the first jump. 2) The second jump is a step which means that we land on the opposite foot. 3) The third jump requires us to land on both feet, propelling ourselves forwards with our arms.
We organised ourselves into groups of four so we could practice the steps and help each other. By placing cones where we landed each time, we could remember how far we jumped so we could keep trying to beat our personal best. Working in groups meant we could help each other if we forgot the steps.
Once we’d had time to practice, it was time to apply our skills to friendly competition. We got into our house teams and competed against a member of each of the other houses. Whoever jumped the furthest earned a point for their house. Congratulations to St George’s for winning a well-contested triple jump competition!
