Today, we continued exploring our new class text, Handa’s Surprise. The story follows Handa as she carries a basket of delicious fruit to her friend Akeyo, but along the way, some very cheeky animals help themselves to the fruit!
Inspired by the story, we decided to have our very own fruit tasting. We explored guava, pineapple, mangoes, bananas, oranges, and avocados. We tried each fruit one at a time together so that we could talk about how it looked, smelled and tasted. The children enjoyed using different words to describe the fruits and sharing their thoughts with their friends.
We were also very lucky to have a lovely parent bring in some guava juice for us to try, which went down a treat! Thank you for such a thoughtful contribution. The children were very excited to try it and enjoyed comparing the juice with the fresh guava.
Mrs Pereira also shared a special memory with us. She told the children that the guavas reminded her of when she was young in Brazil, where she had a guava tree growing in her garden. This was a lovely opportunity for the children to make connections between our story, the fruit we were tasting and experiences from our own lives.
And, of course, our last group were very lucky as there were a few extra pieces of pineapple and mango left over for a little bonus tasting!
