This week in Maths, Year 4 have been learning about lines of symmetry within polygons. Firstly, as a class, we had to explore exactly what a line of symmetry is and found this is when a shape or object has two halves that are mirror images of each other. This means that if you draw a line (line of symmetry) through the middle of the shape, each side would be identical. Our first lesson this week reintroduced us to regular and irregular polygons (2D shapes with straight lines) which helped us to understand how many lines of symmetry a polygon could have. We had to correctly draw the lines of symmetry carefully on each polygon and justify our reasoning to our learning partner.
In our final lesson of the week, we had to work together to complete a symmetric figure. To do this, we used lollipop sticks to recreate polygons and correctly position them so that the line of symmetry would be correctly identical on both halves of the figure. Some of us found this a bit tricky but we managed to use resilience to work out the answers.
Well done Year 4 on a fantastic week of mathematical learning! What did you enjoy most about this week within Maths?
