This week in English, we worked really hard on planning, writing, and editing our own versions of Katie in London.
Katie is a girl who visits different parts of London with her little brother and sees all sorts of amazing sights, such as Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London. We were especially excited to talk about these landmarks, as we will be visiting the Tower of London ourselves later this term!
We began by revisiting the story together, before creating our own story plans. We thought of our own ideas and recorded them carefully, making sure to include expanded noun phrases, interesting adjectives, and “WOW” words. We also practised writing in the first person, just like Katie in the story, but this time we imagined it was us in London. To help our writing flow, we used time adverbs such as first, then and after that, so our readers could follow the order of events clearly. We also reminded ourselves how important capital letters and full stops are.
Later in the week, we moved on to beginning our big write. We wrote the start of our fictional narratives, focusing on using the past tense and describing the amazing places Katie visited – as if we were there ourselves. To keep our writing engaging, we included a range of adjectives and different sentence starters.
Finally, we focused on editing and proof-reading. We looked back at our writing from the previous day and checked carefully for improvements. We made sure we were using the past tense correctly, that our sentences made sense, and that our adjectives and time adverbs helped the reader picture the scene and follow the journey. Once we were happy with our changes, we wrote up our stories neatly in the style of a letter, ready for display.
It was a busy week, and everyone worked really hard. Our finished pieces of writing are now proudly on display – and we’re even more excited about our upcoming visit to the Tower of London!
