This week in RE, we learned all about Baptism and why it is a special sign of God’s love and welcome into the Christian family.
We started by reading the story of Jesus’ Baptism from Matthew 3:13–17. While we read, we looked at some beautiful artwork of the moment when Jesus was baptised. In pairs, we created freeze-frames of the scene where Jesus hears God’s voice. Using thought tracking, we imagined how Jesus might have felt – happy, loved, and maybe a little nervous – and how God might have felt, pleased and proud of His Son. We talked about how God feels the same way when we are baptised.
Next, we learned that Baptism welcomes us into the Catholic Church and the Christian family. It is a sign of God’s love and shows that we can share in eternal life with Him. We also discussed how Baptism is such a special occasion that families often celebrate it with a party, giving cards and gifts to welcome the baby into the Church.
For our activity, we designed Baptism welcome cards for a pretend baby. We decorated the front with symbols like candles, shells, and water, and wrote messages inside that show Baptism is a sign of God’s love, such as “Welcome to God’s family! God is very pleased to have you in the Church” or “God loves you and we do too!”
It was wonderful to see that several children brought in photos of their own Baptisms to share with the class. This made the lesson even more special, as we could see real examples of how families celebrate this important sacrament.
Some of us also thought about a challenge question: Why do we baptise people? What does Baptism tell us about God? We realised that Baptism shows God’s love, welcomes us into His family, and reminds us that we are always part of the Church community.
