When reading with your child, it is important to check that they have understood what they have read. Here are some question prompts that might be helpful for you to ask them:
What does … mean?
Which word told you that…?
Why do/did…?
What does … think/feel? How do you know?
Why did the author choose the words…and…?
What is the main idea of the story?
What did you like/dislike about the story?
How did you know…? (e.g. the wold would be bad?)
Did anything surprise you in the story?
