In Year 5 we have been organising historical information and developing our Geography skills in an attempt to understand how the Anglo-Saxons have influenced Britain. By explaining some of the place names and establishing their meanings, it hasĀ helped us to understand how the Anglo-Saxons have influenced Britain.

We begun by looking at the 7 main Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms and explaining their meanings before discussing other related place names.

In pairs, we then used maps or atlases to find place names containing the suffixes -ham, -ford and -worth. How many can you think of? We then went on to explain what the suffixes mean. Some children went on to think of other related place names that share some of the root meanings described.

We really enjoyed matching up the place names and working out meanings.

Can you find out if there were any Anglo-Saxons living near you?
