This week was our first week of Key Stage 2 and after the summer holidays, it was lovely to be back and get settled in to our new year group!

There was a lot to do in our first week starting with discussing the routines and making suggestions for class rules. Understanding the importance of rules keeping us safe led nicely to our PSHE topic, learning about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. We learned what we mean by rights and responsibilities and we chose 6 key rights that are relevant to our school days: the right to play, to learn, to be safe, to be healthy, to have friends and to be heard. These rights will form the basis of our class charter, which will be a permanent feature of the classroom displays and serve as a constant reminder of our rights and responsibilities.

Another focus of the first week was ‘My Place in the World’ which involved looking at maps of our local area. We began with a map of the world locating continents, then Europe and the UK locating countries, then London before zooming in on Marylebone. We used Google Maps street view to take a virtual walk down the high street and stop regularly to make a note of what’s there. Our tally charts indicated that the High Street has mostly clothes shops and cafes/restaurants with some banks and pharmacies etc. We discussed why there are so many people using the High Street and what would happen if people stopped visiting. We’ve all walked down Marylebone High Street before (many of us many times!) but have we really stopped to think about what’s here?

In Religious Education, we looked at the Creation story and created our own visual representations of the different steps of the story; in Maths, we created visual representations of 3 digit numbers and in English, we asked questions about the front covers of two books we’ll be looking at for the rest of the term. There was also time for the children to perform speeches for school council and nominate themselves for Green Team. Well done to everyone who put themselves forward!

It was a busy and enjoyable first week back and the children settled into new and old routines very quickly. Well done, Year 3!!
