This week in our RE lesson, we began learning about Advent. We started by thinking about what it feels like to wait. The children shared some great examples, such as waiting for their birthdays or waiting in line at the supermarket. We talked about how waiting can sometimes be hard, but also exciting when something special is coming.
We then thought about Christmas and all the ways we prepare for it. The children suggested lots of lovely ideas, including decorating the Christmas tree, putting up lights, and getting presents ready. We looked at a calendar together and talked about how Advent begins in December.
The class explored different Advent calendars and learned how they help us count down the days until Christmas Day, when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus. We also learned about the Advent Wreath. The children counted the candles and discovered how one candle is lit each Sunday leading up to Christmas, with a white candle in the centre that is often lit on Christmas Day.
To finish our lesson, the children made their own Advent Wreaths using painted paper plates. They collaged four candles using cut-up coloured paper and added some glitter to make them beautifully festive. We will return to these wreaths in the coming weeks to help us mark the time of Advent.
