If you heard an ear-popping bang across Marylebone this morning, it was probably Year 5 at our science workshop.  Year 5 helped Miss Jeffrey and Ms McKay at St. Marylebone solve a crime by exploring different chemical reactions.

We started the session by exploring physical changes whereby a material changes but a new product is not created. This was seen when the children dipped a small piece of polystyrene into acetone and then water for 30 seconds.

Then we moved onto exploring chemical changes through a flame test and precipitation reaction with sodium hydroxide in order to catch the culprit.

We learnt  new scientific vocabulary for different apparatus and chemical reactions. The class also became experts on bunsen burners, as they now know the difference between a roaring flame and a safety flame.

Miss Jeffrey and Ms McKay also demonstrated some amazing experiments with us from showing us how fireworks are made (burning iron filings), elephant toothpaste and the class favourite…hydrogen balloons.
