This term, Year 1 are diving into an exciting new geography topic: Coasts and Climate.
In our first lesson, we began by thinking about where we live. Using Google Earth, we zoomed in on our homes and discovered that most of us live in the London boroughs of Westminster or Camden. We learned that these areas are in the United Kingdom, which is part of the continent of Europe.
Next, we looked at a map of the UK and noticed that, while we don’t live right on the coast, we’re not too far from one either. We discussed nearby coastal areas, as well as famous coastlines from around the world, and compared them to our city environment.
We also explored the different climates found in coastal regions and thought about how they might be similar or different to the climate here in London. The children had fantastic ideas and were able to identify a wide variety of coasts across the globe.
To finish our lesson, we wrote a short comparison between life in the city and life by the coast. Then we drew lovely pictures of ourselves enjoying a day at the seaside!
Year 1 are full of enthusiasm and can’t wait to keep learning more about coasts and climate in the weeks ahead.
