Today in Computing, we explored Microsoft MakeCode and the micro:bit, developing our understanding of algorithms, sequencing and loops. We began by creating our own name badges before moving on to designing simple animations using the micro:bit’s LED display, including a beating heart and other creative designs. We also briefly explored how to create an emotion badge to show how we are feeling.

We learned that a micro:bit is a tiny computer that needs an algorithm (a clear set of instructions written in code) in order to produce an output on the display. Thanks to our learning in Year 4, we were already confident with the basics and really enjoyed challenging ourselves to make our micro:bits do even more.

We used the Microsoft MakeCode editor, following helpful instructional videos to ensure our code was set up in the correct order so that it would run successfully. We also learned some new technical vocabulary, discovering that LEDs are Light Emitting Diodes. It was exciting to see our code come to life as our programs ran exactly as we had planned.

We became more familiar with key blocks such as ‘forever’, which is a loop that keeps the code running continuously. This was particularly useful when creating our own icons and animated sequences.

We are looking forward to evaluating our work, improving our programs and discovering even more of what we can achieve using micro:bits and MakeCode. We have thoroughly enjoyed our learning so far and are excited to build on these skills in future lessons.

What would you like to program your micro:bit to do next, and which code blocks do you think you would need to use?

Why is it important to write an algorithm in the correct order when coding?

This was really fun! The next time I make a Micro:Bit code, I might add some music and code more shapes like a star. It is important to write algorithm in the correct order when coding because if you do not, things will not happen in the order you want them to happen.

It was sooooo fun to see the images flashing on the micro-bits and it was very fun to make it on the computer too. We could make different shapes and other forms to make it look so cool!🔬

  3. It was fun

  4. THIS WAS AWESOME! I loved programming these. These are important because without us doing the correct order, it would get confused.

  5. It was super fun to see images we made flashing next time i make a micro bit i will add some music to it.

  6. This was supeerrr fun

  7. This was really fun. I loved creating the images on the microbits it was so fun. I remember doing it in year four and I had the same microbit!

  8. so fun.

  9. Thank you so much for letting us do Micro Bits for computing. It’s really fun seeing the letters or shapes flash on the Micro Bit. I would like to try to make a message appear on the Micro Bit.

I really loved doing all of this because we got to do lots of different lessons like the name tag and flashing heart!

Thank you Miss Forster Adams for making this activity so fun!

  11. This was extremely fun! Thank you to all the teachers who organised this. I loved making name tags and a flashing heart!

  12. This was a fun lesson. At first I didn’t really understand how it worked but then I did and I enjoyed it!😃

Thank you so much Ms Forster Adams for our lesson about micro:bits !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. I loved this it was so fun ! It was so funny to see the little emojis on the microbits

  15. It was really fun for me because my name kept popping up with a heart. It was great!

  16. It was such a fun time!

  17. It was really fun! I enjoyed playing around with the microbit and adding sound and drawings to it.

  18. It was such a fun time!

It was great! My favorite part was when we could create what we wanted to.It was cool to see the micro bit that I had created from year 4 .🙂

  20. I made a maths equasion with my microbit.
