This half term in Art, we have been studying Roman mosaic art and exploring how the Romans created some interesting art pieces all made out of lots of tiny squares to create a pattern. We found out that this is called tessellation and it is when you  create a repeated pattern within a design. We looked at some examples of Roman mosaics especially ones that are still standing today.

For our inspiration, we looked at an artist called Caroline Jariwala who specialises in using tessellation to create mosaic artwork. She is also inspiring because she only uses recycled materials that would be going to landfill in order to stop wastage. We also saw how she represents her Indian culture by displaying this within her mosaics by creating portraits of people and decorating them with bright and powerful colours.

We then had the chance to do some innovation which meant creating our own mosaics using glass tiles and putting these onto a wooden frame. We then had to think about contrasting colours for our backgrounds so that our designs would stand out. We decided to draw designs for our initials in pencil and then start to glue on our tiles to create the shapes.  As you can imagine it was very time consuming but it was worth it as you can see from our impressive art pieces. In the end, we decided to go for a multi-coloured theme to really help our designs stand out.

Year 4, what did you enjoy about our art lessons this week and what design would you do next?
