This week, Reception have been learning about how Hindus celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights. Lots of us noticed the many fireworks in the sky last Sunday, but many children had not realised that these fireworks are believed to ward off evil!

We prepared our classroom by cleaning and putting up twinkly fairy lights. We also made lamps from clay called diye, these are to welcome the goddess Lakshmi into peoples’ homes. Next we created mini rangoli patterns, traditionally these are made with coloured rice flour but we used oil pastels.

Next week, we will continue to learn all about the story of Rama and Sita. We will dress up in Indian costume, act out the story and create some music to accompany it.
