In Design and Technology this half term, Year 1 have been exploring the exciting process of designing, making and evaluating smoothies.

We began by developing our design ideas. To inspire us, we explored a variety of existing smoothies, carefully looking at their packaging, flavours, ingredients and appearance. The children shared their thoughts and preferences, discussing which combinations they thought would taste best. Working collaboratively in groups, they then designed their own smoothies, choosing fruits, creating imaginative names and planning the steps they would need to follow to make their final product. The children showed great creativity and enthusiasm during this stage, coming up with some fantastic ideas.

Today, we brought our designs to life!  After washing our hands and watching Miss McCarry’s demonstration, we got ready to begin. The children worked in their groups with great focus and excitement. Each group was provided with chopping boards, knives and a selection of fruit. They demonstrated excellent safety awareness when using the knives and took great care while preparing their ingredients. It was wonderful to see such strong teamwork, with children supporting one another, sharing tasks and communicating effectively.

Once all of the fruit had been carefully prepared, it was time to blend! To our fruit we had the choice of adding apple or orange juice and we also added some yoghurt to thicken. The children were very excited to see their ingredients transform into delicious smoothies and loved watching the process.

Finally, it was time for the all-important taste test. Each child sampled their smoothie and evaluated their creation, thinking carefully about the taste, texture and appearance. They discussed what they liked most and what they might improve if they were to make their smoothie again. This helped the children to understand the importance of evaluating their work and making improvements.

We were also joined by a very special visitor, Miss Carruthers, who came along to see us creating the smoothies. She was extremely impressed with the children for their creativity and teamwork.

This activity allowed the children to develop a range of important skills, including teamwork, communication, problem-solving and food preparation skills. They also gained a better understanding of healthy eating and the importance of making balanced choices.

Well done, Year 1! You worked incredibly well together, showed fantastic enthusiasm and created some truly delicious smoothies. We are very proud of you—great job!
