This week in Reception, we worked hard on our oracy and writing in English as part of our ‘Jungles’ topic.
In our oracy lesson on Wednesday, we started to prepare our own jungle fact files by designing eye-catching front covers for them.
Before putting pencil to paper, the children took time to look closely at a range of jungle images, using them for inspiration and to spark ideas. They worked in small groups to discuss what they could see. We enjoyed talking about the colours, animals and plants that might included in their drawings. This gave them a wonderful opportunity to build their vocabulary and practise using descriptive language in a meaningful context.
Once they had shared their ideas, the children set to work creating their own jungle scenes with great care and creativity. They focused on detail and used colour to bring their covers to life.
Building on Wednesday’s creative work, on Thursday we started our first pieces of factual writing.
The children focused on two fascinating jungle creatures: bats and poison dart frogs. Together we recalled key facts we’ve been learning throughout the week, such as where these animals live, what they eat, and what they look like.
Using their growing phonics knowledge and developing writing skills, they each composed sentences to share what they had learnt.
It was wonderful to see the children confidently using their sounds to spell unfamiliar words, expanding their vocabulary, and showing their growing understanding about the natural world. Their enthusiasm and independence really shone through as they began to bring their fact files to life! We are excited to continue working on our fact files next week, where we will be writing about two more exciting animals…
Well done Reception for your super hard work in Literacy this week!
