As part of our exciting Schools to Market project, some lucky members of Green Team had the chance to take part in a chutney-making masterclass—yes, you read that right, chutney! This was all in preparation for creating our very own jars of deliciousness to sell in the coming months.
We were warmly welcomed by St Thomas More Language College, where we met our expert chutney connoisseur and workshop leader, Sharon. She introduced us to the world of chutney (spoiler: it’s way more versatile than we thought!) and ran through our recipe, along with some important health and safety tips—because nobody wants a rogue onion in the eye.
With the help of some brilliant Year 7 students from St Thomas More, we gathered our ingredients and got grating. Beetroot, apples, onions… so many onions. It’s safe to say there wasn’t a dry eye in the kitchen. Whether it was the sheer emotion of making chutney or just the onion fumes, we may never know!
Once the veggies were grated and safely in the pan, we added ginger, salt, sugar, and vinegar. Then came the simmering, stirring, and a bit more crying (from the onions, promise). Eventually, the liquid reduced, and we were left with a seriously tasty-looking homemade chutney.
It was a fantastic learning experience, and we’re now even more excited to whip up our own batches to sell. A huge thank you to Sharon, our helpers from St Thomas More, and everyone involved.
Green Team had a brilliant day—and we promise the chutney is made with tears of joy (mostly).
