This week in Religious Education, Year 1 explored the story of the Presentation at the Temple.
Our Religious Education topic this half term is From Galilee to Jerusalem. Through this topic, the children are learning about the ministry of Jesus and the Word of God. They will explore key aspects of Jesus’ life, including his teachings, parables, encounters, and the belief that Jesus is the Son of God.
This week, the children focused on the Presentation at the Temple, when Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. While there, they met Simeon, who immediately recognised Jesus as the light of the world and the promised Messiah. Simeon was filled with joy and praised God as he blessed Jesus. They also met Anna, a devoted and prayerful widow, who instantly knew Jesus was special and thanked God for the gift of His Son. Mary and Joseph were amazed that others recognised the importance of their baby.
During the lesson, the children listened carefully to the story and reflected on how Simeon and Anna may have felt when they met Jesus. They were able to explain that they would have felt excited, joyful, and thankful to meet the chosen Messiah. The children also discussed the meaning of Jesus as the light of the world, explaining that Jesus guides people through love and care. They learned that this story shows how important Jesus is, even from infancy.
In their Religious Education books, the children retold the story of the Presentation at the Temple, describing what Simeon and Anna said and how they felt. They also created beautiful stained-glass window artwork for our display, representing Jesus as special and as the light of our world.
