In Computing, we have been learning about animation using an application called ‘Stop Motion’. We learned how animations are made using a series of many frames including only slight changes to the image each time to create movement of characters. We looked at several examples and then began to explore the application on our ipads.

By drawing a stick man on our whiteboards, we could make him/her appear to move their hand up and down by continuously rubbing the arm out and redrawing it slightly higher whilst taking the same picture each time. We discovered that if you don’t frame the picture in the same place and from the same angle each time, the background appears to constantly jump around in the end product.

Once we felt confident using the application, it was time to plan our own animation taking the constraints of the application into account. For example we had characters who were limited with the movements they could make and settings which couldn’t change. We then put our plans into action and created short stories using all the techniques we had previously learned. There were some wonderful creations – some particularly imaginative and others technically very fluid. Well done Year 3!
