In this final week of the summer term, we have made cushions using running stitch, cross stitch and applique. First we reminded ourselves how to do a running stitch from last year and we learned how to do a cross stitch. Applique is decorative work in which one piece of cloth is sewn or fixed onto another. We looked at examples to get ideas for our own cushions because we could create our own shape of cushion and decorative design.

Once we had decided on the shape and size, we drew it on paper, cut it out and pinned the paper onto fabric. This enabled us to recreate the shape on the fabric. This had to be done twice so both pieces of fabric could be sewn together. Before we sewed the fabrics together, we created appliques to attach to the outside, any shapes we wanted such as heart shapes, star shapes, letters etc.

Once we were happy with the design, it was time to sew the fabrics together, but before we could close it, we filled the cushion with stuffing to bulk it out. Once the last bit was sealed, we had beautiful cushions to take home with us for the summer! Well done Year 3, you should all be proud of your creations!
