This week, Year 4 were treated to a fantastic cooking workshop ran by Youth Kitchen which taught us all about the importance of eating a balance and healthy diet. Youth Kitchen is the education section of the high street restaurant Itsu and our workshop was led by Chefs Billy and Kyle who both had wonderful experience in making delicious healthy meals.

Our workshop started by Chef Billy revising the five main food groups which are: fats, carbohydrates, protein, fruit and vegetables and diary. In our pairs, we had to give examples of foods within each group before Chef Billy gave us an explanation of how our body uses each food group and how much of each, we should be eating to maintain a healthy diet.

Then it was time to move onto to the practical part of the session which was preparing vegetables ahead of making a rainbow ramen meal. The vegetables we had were spring onions, red peppers, courgettes, carrots, and coriander.

Chef Billy showed us how to correctly use kitchen utensils such as a knife (two different techniques), a grater, and a spiralizer to help prepare our vegetables ready to be put into our ramens. Then it was our turn to have a go in which we had to have lots of focus to make sure we were using the utensils safely and correctly. Our task was to create a rainbow box filled with nutritious and delicious vegetables which we would be taking home to make our rainbow ramens with our families.

Once finished, of course it was time to tidy and clean up our areas that we had been working in. Chef Billy gave us the challenge of whoever was the first group to have our area tidy, would be crowned the rainbow ramen champions. Lastly, we were given a Youth Kitchen bag to take home which had the rest of our ingredients for our rainbow ramen recipe such as soba noodles, broth, and a handy recipe card.

Thank you to Youth Kitchen and Chef Billy and Kyle for providing such an informative and practical workshop.

Year 4, what did you enjoy about the workshop? Did you manage to make your rainbow ramen meal? If so, how did it taste?
