This half term, we have been working hard in maths to develop our understanding of numbers to 20. Our main focus this week was number bonds to 20. Building on the excellent progress made last term with number bonds to 10, the children were able to use their mental maths skills to support their learning. We discovered that number bonds to 20 are very similar to number bonds to 10, as they share the same ones/units; we simply add the tens afterwards. Revisiting place value beforehand proved extremely helpful in supporting this understanding.
Although the children completed an activity on number bonds to 20 in their Power Maths books, we felt it would be beneficial to revisit the concept in a more practical way. During this hands-on lesson, the children used multilink cubes to represent the ones and then added the tens. By the end of the session, the children were confidently demonstrating number bonds to 20 using part-whole models, ten frames and number sentences.
This was a fantastic lesson that supported the children in developing confidence and mastery in number bonds to 20.
