We have enjoyed our first week back at school and were excited to welcome back a familiar face!
On our first day, we caught up with friends, shared something from our summer holidays and went over our class expectations. We impressed the adults in Year 5 with how quickly we settled back into school life. One important part of our first day back was electing our new class representatives for School Council and Green Team. Each candidate gave a short manifesto as to why they wanted to be elected and we took part in a secret vote to decide this year’s representatives. Some of us even came prepared with speeches from home!
As part of our learning in PHSE, focusing on Citizenship, we revisited the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Working with our partners, we looked at the different rights, chose four favourites for our classroom and discussed how children and adults can uphold them in school. These are now proudly represented on our class charter with our balloons and photographs.
In Geography, we began our topic My Place in the World with the enquiry question, ‘What is life like in Marylebone?’ We thought about who might come to the area and then looked at data from the City of Westminster. We found out about the population, diversity and wellbeing of the people who live here and summarised our findings in writing. It was interesting to learn more about the community where we come to school. We eventually had to make a decision on what we think life is like… are people happy here? This meant coming to a conclusion based on data, which is a tricky thing to do!
In Religious Education, we started our new unit Creation and Covenant. We read the story of Moses and the burning bush in Exodus 3 and explored its meaning. We discussed how Moses might have felt, studied different artworks and then created our own. Some of us included Moses’ sandals to show the importance of standing on holy ground. Our artwork is now proudly on display in the classroom, and we made sure to reflect on our work within our Religious Education books.
In Shared Reading, we began our work on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Using iPads with our partners, we researched myths, legends, folklore and fables and identified which culture each story came from.
We also learned about the Bayeux Tapestry, which tells the story of the Norman Conquest and the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Each of us studied a section, described what we noticed about the people and animals, and then sketched it ready for a collage. We also explored the work of artist Patricia Zannie, focusing on her use of colour and texture to inspire our own art.
What has been your favourite part of our first week in Year 5?
