Year 2 were incredibly lucky to receive a very special visit from Felicia Kwaku!

Felicia spoke to us all about her inspiring journey to becoming a nurse, starting from her time in primary school right through to her training and career. She proudly shared that she has been a nurse for 37 years, and even after all that time, she still absolutely loves her job – which really inspired us all and showed us the importance of following your passion.

It was wonderful for the children to consolidate all of their learning from last term, where they explored the lives and achievements of significant individuals such as Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. Hearing Felicia’s real-life experiences helped bring this learning to life and made meaningful connections between the past and present.

We learned about some of the challenges she has faced, including her important work during Covid, and we were fascinated to hear that she was recognised by King Charles III and awarded an OBE for her services. This was especially exciting for us, as we have been learning about Florence Nightingale, who was honoured by Queen Victoria, so it was lovely to compare how inspiring individuals are recognised for their contributions both in the past and today.

Felicia also told us about her role as Chair of the Mary Seacole Trust and the important work she does to continue Mary Seacole’s legacy, which the children found incredibly inspiring.

We were also very fortunate to receive a beautiful portrait of Mary Seacole from the National Portrait Gallery, which we will proudly display in our classroom. In addition, some of the children were delighted to receive special badges, making the visit even more memorable.

We had the opportunity to ask lots of thoughtful questions, and Felicia answered every single one with kindness and enthusiasm. It was such an inspiring and memorable experience for Year 2, and we are so grateful for the time she spent with us.

Thank you, Felicia, for sharing your story with us and for inspiring the next generation.
