This week in Religious Education, Year 4 explored the meaning and importance of Lent by creating their own thoughtful Lenten promises. We designed and decorated our own crosses, using them as a visual reminder of our commitment to fast, act and pray during this special season.

Firstly, we had to recap on what Lent is and why it is a special time within our church year. We remembered that Lent lasts for 40 days, leading up to Easter. It is a period when Christians remember the time Jesus spent in the desert, and it encourages people to reflect, pray, and make positive changes in their lives. During Lent, many people choose to give something up or take on a new challenge to grow closer to God and to think about how they can help others.

After thinking about the Corporal Works of Mercy, which we explored in our last lesson, we thought about what Lenten promises we could make and how we could achieve it in our daily lives. We tried to link our promises to the teaching of Jesus, with things such as helping those in need by providing food or drink and showing kindness towards our neighbours.

After we had completed our designs, the children shared their ideas with their learning partners and explained why their chosen promise was meaningful. We reflected on how our actions could make a positive difference to others and grow stronger in compassion and faith during Lent.

Year 4, what did you enjoy most about this lesson?
