Over the past few weeks, our Reception have been learning all about Baptism in our Religious Education lessons.

We have explored the special steps involved and the important symbols that help us to understand the meaning of this joyful celebration.

This week, the children focused on recalling the steps of Baptism through roleplay. To begin, we revisited some of the key symbols we had learned about: the white gown, the font, holy water, the priest, chrism oil, and the shell. We also talked about the special people who are part of a baby’s Baptism, such as parents, godparents, and wider family members like grandparents, aunties and uncles.

The children then worked in small groups to act out a Baptism ceremony. Each child took on a different role, including the priest, parents, godparents, and family members. The parents brought the baby to the font and made their promises, while the priest asked the baby’s name and baptised them using the shell and holy water, saying the special words:

“I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

The priest also made the Sign of the Cross on the baby’s forehead with Chrism oil. The godparents received a Baptism candle as a sign of Jesus’ light, and they promised to help the baby grow in faith and friendship with Jesus.

To end the activity, we took a group photo to celebrate this special moment together. It was a joyful and meaningful way for us to understand how Baptism welcomes us into God’s family and the Church.

Well done Reception!
