This half term in Religious Education, the topic for all classes is ‘Prophecy and Promise.’  The focus for Year 6 is the importance of women in salvation history.

For the first few weeks we focussed on female protagonists in the Old Testament, learning about Sarah, Hannah, Miriam, Deborah and Esther.

Now we are learning more about Mary, the Mother of God. We read about the Annunciation in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew and made comparisons between  the Lucan and Matthean  narratives.  We learned that Mary is the fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecies and promises and became the ‘Mother of God’ by her ‘Yes’ to God’s plan.

We have learned a lot of new theological vocabulary in this topic. One of this week’s new words was ‘fiat’. ‘Fiat’ is a Latin word that means “let it be done.” It refers to Mary’s “yes” to God when the angel asked her to be the mother of Jesus. Her fiat shows her trust and love for God.

We created artwork to show Mary’s ‘fiat’ and then used theological language to describe and explain the belief that Mary became and is the ‘Mother of God’.

Mary said ‘yes’ to God. How could your own ‘Yes’ to God transform your lives, Year 6?
