This week, our Reception (alongside Nursery) children had a fantastic time celebrating Science Week during our Foundation Stage Open Day. The classroom and courtyard were both filled with excitement as the children explored a range of hands on science investigations and discovered how fun it can be to think like scientists!
One of our first investigations explored the question “What makes ice melt the fastest?” The children each had ices cube and tested three different materials: sugar, salt and warm water. Before we began, the children made predictions about which one they thought would melt the ice the quickest. They then observed carefully to see what happened and compared the results together.
Another activity involved exploring magnetic and non-magnetic materials. The children tested a variety of objects using magnets and sorted them into two groups. We then talked about the similarities between the materials that were magnetic and those that were not.
We also had great fun investigating ramps and toy cars. Together we tested different ramp heights to see whether a higher ramp would make the cars travel faster or slower. The children also tried different types of cars and discussed which ones moved the fastest and why.
Our floating and sinking investigation encouraged the children to predict which objects would float and which would sink before testing them in water. The children loved discovering whether their predictions were correct!
Finally, we explored an exciting experiment about germs. Using glitter to represent germs, the children placed their fingers into the water to see how easily germs can spread. When we added soap to our fingers and touched the glitter again, the “germs” quickly scattered away! This helped us understand why washing our hands with soap is so important for keeping us healthy.
On Wednesday we also had a brilliant time at the Dougie Doug Doug ‘Crazy Science Show’ where we got to see some super exciting science experiments in action!
It was a wonderful week of curiosity, exploration and discovery. The children asked brilliant questions, made thoughtful predictions and enjoyed learning through fun yet practical experiments.
We are very proud of our young scientists and the enthusiasm they showed throughout Science Week! Thank you to Miss Drury for organising such a brilliant week to celebrate Science.
