On Monday, Year 1 enjoyed a fantastic Toy Day!
This is always an exciting event, as the children bring in one of their favourite toys to support our learning in both History and English. We have been exploring toys from the past and present, and Toy Day gave us the perfect opportunity to bring this learning to life.
We began the day by introducing our toys. Each child proudly shared their chosen toy and explained why it was their favourite.
In English, we continued our work on Dogger by Shirley Hughes—a story about a young boy who loses his favourite toy. We have been focusing on using adjectives and improving our character descriptions, so the children used this session to describe their own toys in detail. They thought carefully about their adjectives and then wrote simple sentences to show off their fantastic vocabulary.
In History, we examined our toys more closely and discussed how and where they were made. After comparing them to toys from the past, we discovered that many of our modern favourites are made of plastic and produced in factories by machines. In contrast, older toys were often made of wood and handcrafted.
The children had a wonderful day sharing, exploring, and playing with their toys—and they produced some brilliant work along the way!
