As part of our ‘Seasons’ topic, we planted marigolds in our Understanding of the World lesson this week!
In class, we looked at the different stages of a seed growing and talked about each part of the plant, including the roots, shoot and stem. We discussed why roots are important and what a plant needs in order to grow well.
Outside, the children each got their own plant pot and carefully filled it most of the way up with soil. They then chose 5 marigold seeds, covered them with more soil and finally watered their seeds ready for them to grow. We noticed how tiny the seeds were and talked about how seeds look different depending on the plant they grow into.
Everyone will be taking their marigold seeds home on Friday, so they can continue to care for them and watch them grow.
Before we took them, we talked about when to water the plants and where to keep them so that they grow strong and healthy.
We would love to see some pictures of the flowers once they begin to grow (hopefully in about 2 to 3 weeks) and we are very excited to see how beautiful the flowers become by spring time!
