This week in English, we have been working on retelling our new story, Last Stop on Market Street. The story follows a child and his grandmother as they make a journey to a soup kitchen, where meals are served to people in need. The main themes of the story are kindness and hope. Last week, the children enjoyed writing senses poems, exploring what CJ could see, hear, and smell on his journey to Market Street. This week, they planned and wrote their own retells, using time adverbials, past tense verbs, and some fantastic adjectives to bring their writing to life.

In maths, we have been learning to recognise 2D and 3D shapes. The children practised counting the sides and vertices of different shapes and became confident in using the new keyword vertices when describing them. They enjoyed exploring the differences between shapes and applying their knowledge through a variety of activities and games.

In geography, we looked at aerial photographs of London and identified some well-known landmarks, such as Tower Bridge, the BT Tower, and the Tower of London. Using these skills, the children created their own maps with keys to show the landmarks around the Thames, combining observation with creativity.

In RE, we explored the story of the Visitation from Luke. The children have been enjoying reading the Bible during our lessons, and this week we read the story together aloud. They reflected on the emotions and gestures of Mary and Elizabeth and connected the story to the Magnificat. We also listened to a version of the Magnificat song, paying attention to words that stood out and thinking about their meaning. The children then created posters showing how they could “magnify” God’s love, choosing phrases from the Magnificat and illustrating them with modern actions, such as helping the hungry or showing kindness in their community. This linked beautifully to our English work on Last Stop on Market Street, as both stories highlight the importance of caring for others and showing kindness to those in need. The children also wrote reflections on how these actions could help make the world a fairer place and how Mary’s prayer inspires them today.

In science, we focused on waterproof materials. The children enjoyed testing different materials, including foil and tissue paper, to see which could reliably keep water out. It was a fun, hands-on way to explore the properties of materials and understand what makes some of them waterproof.

In PE, we started with a warm-up to get our heart rates up before moving through different activity stations. The children practiced star jumps, hopping across the hall, pull-ups, and high knees. It was an energetic and exciting week that helped develop both fitness and coordination.

Overall, it has been a fantastic week full of learning, creativity, and fun across all our subjects.
