On Thursday, Class 6 travelled back in time to the home front in 1940. Through a range of different creative activities, we learnt more about life in Britain during World War 2. Food shortages meant that many types of food were rationed so people could only buy a certain amount each week. Using a genuine recipe from 1940, we made an eggless chocolate cake which tasted quite different to chocolate cakes nowadays! ‘Make do and mend’ was a popular Government slogan which encouraged people not to throw anything away but to re-use it instead. We used our sewing skills to turn some old, worn-out clothes into a colourful rag-rug. Another famous slogan was ‘Dig for Victory’- our large-scale painting demonstrates how people grew their own vegetables to feed their families and friends. Learning about the Blitz inspired our vivid collages, while our charcoal portraits of some very sad-looking evacuees show the emotions of children evacuated to the countryside to keep them safe. Finally, we also designed some beautiful clay poppies to remind us of how much the families at home must have worried about their loved ones fighting on the battlefront.
