This week, our Maths lessons have been about measurement. We started by looking at our rulers and metre sticks to work out how many centimetres there are in a metre and how many millimetres there are in a centimetre. We worked out how to read the scales on our rulers and we learned the importance of measuring accurately beginning from the zero.

To put our learning into practice we got into groups of 3 and using metre sticks, 30cm rulers and 15cm rulers, we measured a range of different items around the classroom. We had to work as a team because if the item was large (the length of the display board for example), one group member would have to hold the metre stick in place, while anotherĀ  continued the measurement with a ruler. The job of the third group member was to read the measurement accurately. If we anyone wasn’t feeling confident with reading the scales, we could help each other.

There were loads of things to measure such as the interactive whiteboard, the window sill, the display board, the portable whiteboard, the chest of drawers, the tables. It was very important to understand the difference between length, width and height because we had to be clear which part of the item we were measuring! After learning how to measure in metres and centimetres, we applied what we had learned to measuring smaller items in centimetres and millimetres, which led to problem solving and finding equivalent lengths. Next week, we’ll move onto adding and subtracting lengths which will help us learn how to calculate the perimeters of different shapes!
