This week, we had the privilege of taking part in a sketching workshop at the October Gallery. We started by looking at the current exhibition, which is a series of abstract artworks made only within the last couple of years. The children were encouraged to analyse the art and decide what they liked and what they didn’t like about the art.
We then started to think about different ways we can sketch and different utensils we can sketch with, and the children were given different materials which they could place under their papers so using crayons, they could replicate the design or patterns of the fabric. Once we were sat at our tables, we were asked to imagine a place where we feel happy and think about the colours that we can see in our imagination. We then used those colours to draw representations of those feelings on strips of paper.
The patterns created from fabrics earlier were then added to the strips to form of a small collage. Because the crayons were water soluble, we were able to add water and create interesting effects with the colours as well. Once we had created our works of Art, we placed each strip on our tables together to create one collaborative piece of artwork for each table, an idea inspired by much of the artworks on display in the gallery.
We had a lovely time at the workshop and it got our creative juices flowing. Many thanks to Jess at October Gallery for planning, organising and facilitating the workshop.
