This week, Year 4 went on a trip to the world-famous LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) theatre in Baron’s Court to take part in a technical theatre workshop which details all the things that happen behind the scenes in order to create the wonderful experience that we get when we visit the theatre for a performance.

Ahead of taking part in the Primary Shakespeare Project in the summer term, it was very exciting to be invited to see how everything works.

Once we arrived and were settled in, our hosts introduced us to the world-famous Sainsbury Theatre and we were treated to an incredible show that demonstrated all the lights and sounds used to create the amazing theatre performance. We then got split into groups to go and learn more about the different elements that all have to work together to put on a theatre show.

We met with a sound engineer, a light engineer,  a stage manager and also the fly person (who controls the movement of all the scenery onto the stage by pulling ropes). We made our way around the theatre on a rotation and got to have a go at selecting different lights and playing sounds in the theatre. A class favourite was getting the chance to pull the rope to operate the curtain and realising how organised you need to be to make sure the show below is not interupted! We learnt that all these different roles have to communicate together via headsets so that the show can run like clockwork!

Thank you to the parent volunteers who also helped us today and we are looking forward to coming back and performing at LAMDA for our Primary Shakespeare Project in June!

What did you enjoy most about the trip Year 4?
