Today, as part of our History Topic ‘The Kingdom of Benin’, Year 6 visited the British Museum. We have been exploring the big question ‘Who do the Benin Bronzes really belong to?’ so we decided to go to see them for ourselves. The British Museum houses the largest collection of artefacts from the Kingdom of Benin in the world. The collection includes the famous Benin Bronzes as well as sculptures and jewellery made of ivory, terracotta and coral.
Unfortunately, when we arrived at the British Museum, we found to our disappointment that the Africa Gallery was closed! We had been so looking forward to actually seeing the artefacts after seeing so many photographs and learning so much about them but we made the best of our trip by going to look at the Greek and Roman artefacts instead which reminded us of previous History topic and we found an interesting exhibition about the History of money. We also did some sketching as inspiration for our next piece of Art work.
Thank you so much to the parents who volunteered to come with us- We really appreciate your support.
The Africa gallery is re-opening on the 20th March so, please try to visit the Benin Bronzes one weekend or holiday, Year 6. If you take photos, you can send them to me and we can share them on the website.
