This week in Religious Education, Year 1 have been learning about Pentecost and the importance of the Holy Spirit. The children discovered that the Holy Spirit does not appear only at Pentecost, but is mentioned many times throughout the Bible.
We explored four key and significant events, discussing how the Holy Spirit is described and its role in each moment. The class looked at the creation story in Genesis, where the Holy Spirit moves over the waters. In Luke’s Gospel, they learned about the Annunciation, where the Holy Spirit appears as a bright light over Mary, and also about Jesus’ baptism, when the Holy Spirit is seen as a dove. Finally, the children revisited Pentecost in the Acts of the Apostles, where the Holy Spirit arrives with the sound of wind and flames above the disciples.
Within their books, the children created symbols and drawings to represent how the Holy Spirit was described in each of these important events. Their work turned out beautifully, and they should all feel very proud of their strong understanding and hard work.
