Last week, our Year 1 children completed their Phonics Screening Check, a statutory assessment taken by all Year 1 pupils across the country.

Since Nursery, the children have participated in daily phonics lessons to develop their reading skills and build strong foundations for learning. Throughout this year, they have worked incredibly hard, learning a wide range of new digraphs and trigraphs while also revisiting and consolidating sounds introduced during their EYFS journey.

In preparation for the screening check, the children took part in daily phonics sessions, targeted interventions, and a variety of engaging phonics games and activities. Their dedication, perseverance, and enthusiasm have been wonderful to see, and we are immensely proud of the effort they have shown throughout the year. It was especially rewarding to see how proud they were of their own achievements.

We would also like to extend a huge thank you to all the staff who have supported the children’s phonics learning and to our fantastic parents and carers for their continued support at home. The partnership between school and home has played an important role in helping the children succeed.

To celebrate the end of Phonics Screening Check Week, the children enjoyed some well-deserved time in the sunshine with an ice lolly in the courtyard.

Well done, Year 1! You have worked incredibly hard, and we are extremely proud of everything you have achieved. Keep up the fantastic work!
