This half term, we have been developing ourpersuasive writing skills through our class text, The Odyssey by Gillian Cross.

Stepping into the shoes of Odysseus, we imagined that his weary crew wanted to abandon their long voyage home. Our challenge was to write and deliver a persuasive speech convincing our sailors to continue their perilous journey. Throughout the unit, we explored how great speakers use rhetorical questions, emotive language, repetition and strong reasons to influence an audience. We also considered how dialogue and character helped us understand the crew’s fears and Odysseus’ determination.

After carefully planning, drafting and editing our speeches, several of us confidently performed our work to the class, using expression and persuasive techniques to bring our writing to life. We were incredibly impressed by the confidence, enthusiasm and creativity they showed as they stepped into the role of the legendary Greek hero.

We are looking forward to hearing even more fantastic speeches over the coming weeks as the rest of the class continue to share their powerful performances.

Which persuasive techniques would you use to inspire others to never give up?
