As part of our Keeping Safe learning in PSHE, we were delighted to welcome Martin back to school to deliver another fantastic First Aid Workshop. The children were excited to see Teddy again, although this time he needed our help as he was found unresponsive! Martin carefully demonstrated how to place someone into the recovery position, explaining why it is so important while waiting for help to arrive. The children then worked brilliantly with their partners, taking turns to practise the recovery position and showing great care and teamwork.

Next, we learnt all about choking and, most importantly, how to help prevent it. Martin taught us the memorable phrase “Sit, Chop, Chew” to remind us to always sit down while eating, cut food into small pieces and chew it properly before swallowing. We then watched as Teddy began to choke and learnt the three key signs to look out for: changes in skin colour, being unable to speak or cough, and holding or clutching their throat. Martin explained that we should first ask, “Are you choking?” If they nod, you can help by giving up to five firm back blows using the heel of their hand between the shoulder blades to help clear the blockage. The children listened so carefully and asked some fantastic questions, showing just how much they wanted to learn these important life-saving skills.

To finish the session, we read the story of Freddie, who loved sausages but accidentally choked while eating. Together, we talked about what Freddie should do, who he could ask for help and how the people around him could respond safely. It was a wonderful way to recap everything we had learnt and helped the children remember the important messages from the workshop.

A huge thank you to the SVPA for generously funding this fantastic workshop!
