This term in DT, Year 2 have been learning about structures by designing and making a chair for Baby Bear.
We started by looking at different types of chairs and discussing what makes a chair strong, stable and suitable for its user. We explored how different shapes affect the strength of a structure and discovered that cylinder shapes can help make structures stronger. We also investigated how the thickness of materials changes their strength and why choosing the right materials is important.
Using what we had learned, the children designed and made their own chairs for Baby Bear. They carefully selected materials, folded and shaped paper to make it stronger, and thought about how to build a stable structure that could support weight.
At the end of the project, the children evaluated their chairs against their design criteria, discussed what worked well and suggested improvements they could make. We were so impressed with the creativity, problem-solving and resilience the children showed throughout this exciting design challenge!
