This week, Year 1 began our exciting new Geography topic all about Marylebone, exploring the local area around our school.
We started by thinking about where Marylebone is in the world. Using Google Earth, we zoomed in from the United Kingdom, to England, to London and finally to Marylebone. The children really enjoyed seeing how places can be located at different scales and maps and developing their understanding of where our local area fits within the wider world.
We then went on a virtual tour of Marylebone using Google Street View. The children enjoyed spotting some of the famous landmarks and places in our local area, including Baker Street Station, Madame Tussauds, Daunt Books, The Wallace Collection and, of course, our very own school!
To begin exploring the human and physical features of our local area, the children looked carefully at photographs of typical streets in Marylebone. They noticed the different colours, shapes, patterns and lines they could see in the buildings before using oil pastels to create their own artwork inspired by a Marylebone street. We are looking forward to displaying their fantastic artwork in our classroom!
We are excited to continue exploring Marylebone and our local area in our Geography lessons throughout this half term and finding out even more about the special place right on our doorstep.
